Editor's note: This is an original introductory guide. Hardware revisions, software compatibility and preservation conditions can vary by model.
An affordable starting point
The Sinclair ZX Spectrum arrived in 1982 and offered an affordable path into home computing, especially in the United Kingdom. Its compact form and distinctive rubber keyboard made it instantly recognizable.
The rubber-key experience
Users loaded programs from cassette tapes and typed BASIC commands. Limitations in graphics and memory encouraged ingenious game design and creative technical solutions.
The software explosion
The Spectrum became a cultural touchstone because so many people learned to code, play and experiment on the same accessible platform.
